The automotive industry has rapidly adopted the eSIM since its introduction in 2016. According to McKinsey & Company, 95% of new vehicles will be connected to the Internet by 2030, with 12% capable of autonomous driving.

However, the full potential of connectivity has not been realized.

McKinsey has identified three significant challenges automakers face:
  • making connectivity profitable,
  • overcoming technological obstacles, and
  • communicating the value of connectivity to customers.

In addition, car manufacturers currently lack a suitable solution for connectivity management. The fragmented connectivity market and the use of incompatible platforms without synergies add to the complexity that manufacturers face.

Today, 1oT unveils a two-year development initiative to create a comprehensive eSIM solution and connectivity management platform (CMP) for the mobility industry.

The platform will streamline eSIM implementation for car manufacturers and enable them to manage all their connectivity vendors and subscriptions through a single interface and API.

As part of the project, we will add IoT eSIM (SGP.32) to the 1oT eSIM Core product portfolio, which supports M2M and consumer eSIM. We'll also expand the CMP, the 1oT Terminal, into a central orchestrator for connectivity management.

The project is partly funded by the European Union's research and development funding, and 1oT will invest €1.1 million in developing a dedicated solution for the mobility industry.

All your connectivity partners and agreements in one interface

The year 2022 was pivotal for connected cars. Counterpoint Research reported that over 50% of car sales were for connected cars, a major milestone.

Connected cars offer benefits such as improved safety, additional entertainment options, and greater convenience for drivers.

In logistics and transportation, telematics data and onboard diagnostics help monitor the movement and health of a vehicle by retrieving information like fuel consumption, driving behavior, and location.

Connected vehicle technology is increasingly popular in modern car models. However, car manufacturers face unique problems in keeping their vehicles connected due to their long lifespan and wide geographical range.

1oT has always aimed to make eSIM technology the standard in the IoT connectivity market and unleash its socio-economic benefits. Now, we aim to revolutionize how the mobility industry uses, perceives, and handles connectivity.

Our connectivity orchestration platform consolidates your telecom partners and agreements into a single interface, so you no longer need multiple platforms. With this platform, you can easily manage global and domestic connectivity throughout a vehicle's lifecycle—from production to retirement.

You also get a set of APIs to integrate with your backend and monitor data usage, network performance, and device health to detect potential issues and prevent connectivity disruptions.

Reliable cellular connectivity is crucial

One of the reasons why car manufacturers struggle to make connectivity profitable is technological know-how. Developing a connectivity service that is suitable and compatible with future technologies requires specialized skills that car manufacturers often lack.

Instead of spending years developing and implementing a complex connectivity service, 1oT does it for you. We provide all the necessary tools to onboard connectivity providers and customers, monitor data usage, network performance, and device health, and identify and prevent connectivity disruptions.

Another obstacle is getting end customers excited about the features of a connected car and accepting the additional costs involved. Valuable and reliable features are key to attracting customers to your connectivity service.

Reliable cellular connectivity is crucial for telematics, infotainment, safety functions (eCall function), and many other applications that make driving safer and more comfortable. In addition, connectivity enables car manufacturers to carry out over-the-air software updates that save customers a visit to the workshop.

Connected cars can pose privacy and security risks that may discourage customers. At 1oT, we prioritize safety by applying stringent security measures. 1oT Terminal includes features to detect network anomalies and quickly identify suspicious behavior.

1oT is uniquely positioned to solve complex challenges

What sets us apart from other RSP providers is that we don't manufacture the cards and, therefore, don't impose our operating system or eUICC. You can bring your own EUMs and SIMs—our integrations are in place and simplify onboarding new EUMs.

After building the most modern connectivity management platform, three eSIM infrastructures, and completing tens of integrations with telecoms, we are confident that building a system that integrates through and through will have a compounding advantage for any enterprise. We understand every part of our product, so the result will be a powerful, modular structure that accommodates massive scale yet can be white-labeled for the automotive industry's specific needs.
