The challenges of the "Freedom to leave" feature

In recent years, many connectivity service providers have been promoting the "freedom to leave" feature when it comes to eSIMs. On paper, it is an excellent advantage for enterprises.

The idea is that if your current connectivity offer no longer suits you, you can take your eSIMs and switch to a new provider. However, upon closer examination, some challenges arise when making this switch.

In this blog post, we will examine the issues associated with switching connectivity providers using eSIMs (specifically the machine-to-machine variant known as SGP.02) and discuss better available alternatives. We should note that we will also soon write on the upcoming IoT eSIM variant (SGP.31 and SGP.32) that GSMA is currently developing.

The Problem with Switching Connectivity Providers

One of the biggest challenges in switching connectivity providers with eSIMs is finding a suitable provider. The new provider not only needs to have a GSMA SAS-SM certified eSIM infrastructure but must also have eSIM profiles in SM-DP, which is less common than one might think.

Most providers only offer bootstrap connectivity on the eUICC, which means they have not generated profiles to SM-DP. That makes it difficult for customers to find a compatible provider for a seamless switch.

Another issue is the technical process of migrating from one provider to another. It often requires a complicated and expensive SM-SR swap.

If the original eUICC is not tied to a specific SM-SR, an ES1 re-registration is possible. Although technically simpler, this process requires coordination between three parties: you as the owner of the eUICC, your new connectivity provider or their SM-SR partner, and your previous provider or their SM-SR partner. Unfortunately, the third is usually not very motivated to assist with the switch.

1oT does the heavy lifting of eSIM-related integrations

At 1oT, we understand enterprises' challenges when looking for flexible connectivity with eSIMs. That's why we offer a solution that simplifies the process and provides peace of mind.

As an independent middleman, 1oT has many telecom partners and can recommend the most suitable eSIM profile based on the customer's requirements.

Also, we don't have our own connectivity or roaming commitments to deliver. This lets us suggest the best eSIM profile from our six global telecom partners (the number is growing). We can recommend the most suitable provider based on the customer's requirements, ensuring a smooth transition.

Bring Your Own Connectivity and future-proof deployments with 1oT’s partner telecoms

At 1oT, we offer an unparalleled advantage that gives you complete freedom and control over your connectivity. Because we own the eSIM infrastructure, we can help you bring your current connectivity provider onto our eSIM infrastructure.

This means you can continue to use your current provider while accessing other connectivity services through 1oT's partner telecoms.

Whether you have a small or large fleet of devices, you can manage all your eSIMs from a single connectivity management platform, regardless of the active connectivity provider. With 1oT, you have the convenience of having everything under one roof without the added complexity of dealing with multiple service providers.

Switching connectivity providers often involves complex integrations and compatibility tests. At 1oT, we handle all the heavy lifting regarding eSIM-related integrations. This includes automated eUICC compatibility tests before a large-scale launch, saving customers time and effort.

While the concept of "freedom to leave" with eSIMs is promising, the challenges involved in making the switch can be discouraging.

However, 1oT offers a solution that addresses these challenges and simplifies the process. With our wide range of telecom partners and expertise in eSIM-related integrations, customers can enjoy the benefits of eSIMs without the headache of managing everything themselves.
